Specialty Flooring Systems
Fully vitrified industrial ceramic tile — also called clinker tile, quarry tile, or vitrified tile — for breweries, food processing plants, commercial kitchens, and washdown floors where resinous coatings reach their limit.
Straight answer up front: this is a system GroCo is actively bringing to the Midwest, and we are taking project inquiries now. If you are specifying tile on a project, we want to be in that conversation early.
Where Coatings Reach Their Limit
A resinous floor is bonded to your slab, and its whole performance depends on that bond holding. In brewhouses, cook lines, wet-process rooms, and CIP zones, the failure mode is almost always the same one: thermal cycling and chemical attack work on the bond until the coating lifts, and you are back out to bid.
Fully vitrified ceramic tile takes a different approach. The wear surface is a fired ceramic body with near-zero water absorption — chemically inert, dimensionally stable through hot washdown and freezer cycles, and hard enough to take pallet jacks, drum carts, and dropped tooling without gouging. It is set in a bedding mortar with epoxy or vinyl ester grout, so the chemical barrier is the joint system rather than an adhesive film. And when damage does happen, you replace tiles — not the room.
This is the standard production floor across European breweries and food plants. It shows up on more and more U.S. projects because architects and food-safety consultants are specifying for a 30-year building life instead of a 7-year recoat cycle.

The Right Floor For Your Environment
We install resinous flooring for a living, so take this as a contractor arguing against his own default: tile is the better answer on a narrow set of floors, and the wrong answer on most of them.
When Tile Is the Right Call
Daily thermal shock, aggressive process chemistry, heavy mechanical abuse — and an owner building for decades rather than years. Tile is the only assembly we work with where the wear surface itself is chemically inert instead of relying on a bond to the slab.
Trade-off: the highest first cost of anything we install, the longest install schedule, and real slab-depth and drain-elevation requirements. It earns that back only if the floor stays in service well past the point a coating would have been replaced twice.
When Urethane Cement Wins
Same harsh environment — but you need the room back in 24 to 48 hours, or the existing slab and drain elevations will not accept a tile assembly. Urethane cement handles thermal shock and chemical washdown at a fraction of the schedule and first cost.

When Epoxy Is Enough
Dry production areas, warehousing, packaging halls, mechanical rooms, and offices. Moderate chemical exposure, no thermal cycling, no standing water. Specifying tile here is spending money on a problem you do not have.
When Tile Is Not the Answer
Retrofits with no floor depth to give up. Tight shutdown windows. Budgets where first cost governs the decision. Small rooms where mobilization dominates the number.
We would rather tell you that on the site survey than write you a proposal you should not accept.
Specification and Detailing
Industrial ceramic tile is a manufacturer-specified assembly, not a product you pick off a shelf. These are the decisions that get made on your project, and the ones we would walk through with you and your design team.
Tile Body
Fully vitrified ceramic, quality-tested to DIN EN 14411 — near-zero water absorption, color running through the body rather than sitting in a glaze.
Thickness
Typically 3/8 in. to 3/4 in., selected against your traffic profile, impact loading, and whether forklifts or drum carts run the floor.
Grout System
Epoxy grout through chemical-exposure zones; vinyl ester specified around CIP systems where the chemistry is most aggressive.
Joint Width
Narrow joints, generally 1/16 in. to 1/8 in., to reduce standing water and eliminate soil traps in sanitary environments.
Slip Resistance
Surface texture evaluated against ANSI A326.3 dynamic coefficient of friction for the wet-process areas it is actually going into.
Setting Method
Thinset or vibration-bed installation depending on the assembly, substrate condition, and the loading the floor has to carry.
Drainage and Slope
Trench and area drain detailing, slope-to-drain layout, and transitions coordinated with the slab before anything gets ordered.
Base and Movement
Coved tile base for sanitary washdown, plus expansion and movement joint layout designed with the structure — not improvised on site.
An honest note on slip resistance: no floor is slip-proof, tile included. DCOF is one input. Real-world slip performance depends just as much on your cleaning protocol, footwear policy, and drainage as it does on the surface you buy. We will talk about all four.

We are not learning this on your floor. Our tile installation partner is a contractor we have worked alongside directly, with a crew we rate and that has set this assembly before.

Fully vitrified tile is a manufacturer-specified assembly. Factory technical support, submittals, and spec documentation come with the product — your design team is not relying on us alone for the engineering.
An owner still walks the job.
Michael Groff or Colby Coda personally surveys the facility, same as every resinous project we run. Neither of us will put a system in your building we do not believe belongs there.
We will talk you out of it if it is wrong.
If urethane cement or a resinous system serves your facility better, that is what we will recommend — even though tile is the bigger ticket. That has not changed since the day we started the company.
