THE PROBLEM AUDITORS FIND FIRST

Your Floor Passed. Your Walls and the Joint Between Them Did Not.

In a washdown facility, the wall is not a separate surface from the floor. It is the same sanitary envelope, and it fails at the seam. Painted block, FRP panels with silicone joints, and unsealed drywall all share the same weakness: an interface where water gets behind the finish and never comes back out.

That is where the problems start. Product residue collects in the joint. Moisture migrates behind the panel. Mold establishes where no one can see it or reach it. And on audit day, the finding is not about the coating. It is about the fact that the surface is not cleanable and not sealed.

A properly specified wall system solves this by making the wall and floor one continuous, monolithic, cleanable surface with a coved transition and no joint to fail. It is a meaningfully different scope from painting walls, and it is the reason washdown facilities keep replacing FRP while coated facilities do not.

Wall coating specifications range from a thin cleanable film to a reinforced, impact-resistant sanitary shell. What separates them is impact exposure, chemistry, and how aggressive your cleaning regime is.

MOST COMMON

High-Build Epoxy Wall Coating

A pigmented, high-build epoxy applied over prepared block, concrete, or drywall to create a seamless, non-porous, easily cleaned surface. Bridges CMU texture, tolerates daily washdown, and delivers the bright, uniform finish auditors expect.

Best for: processing rooms, kitchens, coolers, and general sanitary areas.

HEAVY DUTY

Reinforced and Block-Filled Systems

Where the wall takes cart, pallet, and hose impact, a block filler and reinforced buildup gives real impact and abrasion resistance rather than a film that chips at every corner. Paired with stainless or resinous corner guards in the high-traffic zones.

Best for: dock walls, corridors, heavy-traffic processing, and wash bays.

THE CRITICAL DETAIL

Integral Coved Base

A radiused cove formed at the wall-to-floor junction, tied into both the floor system and the wall coating, eliminating the ninety-degree corner where residue and water collect. This single detail is the most common difference between a facility that passes audits and one that keeps getting written up.

Antimicrobial and USDA-Accepted Finishes

Where your quality program or inspection body requires it, we specify wall finishes with antimicrobial additives and documented USDA acceptance, and we provide the submittal documentation with the proposal rather than after the fact.

Wall coatings introduce constraints floors do not, including overspray, containment, and the order of operations against your floor system. We plan the sequence before we mobilize.

SEQUENCE

Walls Before Floors, Cove Last

In most sanitary rooms the correct order is wall prep and coating first, floor system second, integral cove tying the two together. Reversing it means masking a brand-new floor and detailing the cove twice.

OPTION 1

Room-by-Room Phasing

We isolate and contain one room at a time so production continues elsewhere in the plant. Standard practice in food facilities where a full shutdown is not on the table.

OPTION 2

Sanitation Window and Weekend Work

Many wall installs run during your existing weekly sanitation window or across a weekend, with the room released back for pre-op inspection before the next shift.

Michael Groff or Colby Coda walks the room, checks the substrate and moisture condition, reviews your sanitation chemistry and audit requirements, and looks hard at the wall-to-floor junction that most quotes leave out. We work with Sherwin-Williams, Sika, Tnemec, Florock, Dur-A-Flex, and ResTek, and we scope walls and floors as one sanitary envelope rather than two line items.
